Ricky Pearsall Placed on IR for Season-Ending PCL Surgery; 49ers WR Room Shifts with Deebo Samuel Return and Mike Evans Minor Quad Strain

49ers WR Ricky Pearsall will miss the entire 2026 season after opting for surgery on a lingering PCL injury. Deebo Samuel has rejoined the team on a one-year deal, while Mike Evans is dealing with a minor quad strain that kept him out of Monday's practice.

The San Francisco 49ers' wide receiver depth took another hit early in training camp as Ricky Pearsall was placed on season-ending injured reserve. General manager John Lynch confirmed Pearsall will undergo surgery in the coming weeks on the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury in his right knee that has lingered since Week 4 of the 2025 season.

The recovery timeline is projected at 6-12 months, with nine months as a potential sweet spot for a return in 2027. The team and player had hoped rest and rehab would suffice after limited play in 2025 (36 receptions for 528 yards across 10 games including postseason), but swelling returned after just a few camp practices.

In a corresponding move, the 49ers signed Deebo Samuel Sr. to a one-year, $7 million deal, reuniting him with the organization. Samuel has already returned to practice in red and gold.

Meanwhile, newly acquired veteran Mike Evans (coming over from Tampa Bay) sat out Monday's practice with a very minor quad strain that is not considered serious, per reports. Evans has been a standout in camp prior to the setback and should form a key part of the receiving corps alongside Samuel, Christian Kirk, and rookie De'Zhaun Stribling. Fantasy managers should monitor Evans closely but the early indication is positive for a quick return.

Pearsall's absence elevates opportunities for the remaining pass-catchers in Kyle Shanahan's scheme, particularly in an offense that has dealt with significant injury issues in recent years. Samuel's versatility as a runner and receiver could unlock creative packages, while Evans provides a proven red-zone and downfield threat.
